In February, 2008, GRYE had planted its first jatropha seedlings on the 300 hectares of farm land in the island of Batan, province of Albay, South East of Luzon Island. The first harvesting season is estimated to begin in the Spring of 2009. The largest as well as the most ideal and prime jatropha plantations are geographically located in the island of Mindanao, in which more than 30,000 hectares of land are already confirmed for our jatropha plantations expansion. The Jatropha Curcas plants grow almost anywhere, even on gravelly, sandy and saline soils. Jatropha oil can be processed to produce a high-quality biodiesel that can be used in a standard diesel car, as well as in the aviation industry to fuel jet planes; while the residue can also be processed into biomass to power electricity. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT GreenGold Ray Energies Inc. already developed its own technology for jatropha curcas, from seeds selection, germination, seedlings transplant, cross pollination and stem cutting. This technology will be applied to all company’s future plantations. Jatropha Curcas (tuba-tuba) is primarily a deciduous plant from the family Euphorbiaceae. It was initially used as valuable hedge plant and was exported from central America to Asia and Africa by Portuguese traders. Here in the Philippines, jatropha plant has well known medicinal properties and used for curing different ailments. The mature jatropha trees bear male and female inflorescence and can grow to a height of three meters. Each inflorescence bears up 10 to 15 large fruits and bloom twice a year under normal conditions. Jatropha is desirable as a source of bio fuel given that its seeds produce up to 40% oil, and the species in general is highly resistant to drought and pest. Processed oil from crushed mature seeds can be used in existing diesel engines while the residue can also be processed into biomass as fuel for electricity generating plants. The seed cake, a by-product of oil production can be used as a natural organic fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium but not useful as an animal feeds due to its toxic elements. Jatropha Cultivations Mindanao is very ideal for jatropha cultivation because these areas are far from typhoon belt zone, the inflorescence will not be disturbed by strong winds, and therefore highest fruit yield will be achieved year round. Jatropha is easy to cultivate, it can survive on degraded soil and in areas susceptible to long period of drought and also ideal on marginal land, leaving prime areas available for food crops. Jatropha takes approximately 12 to 15 months from planting to first harvest and the plant can thrive successfully up to 40 years.

The Philippines, as one of the signatories’ required all local petroleum companies to blend their product fuel with the environment-friendly biofuels extracted from locally grown plants, one of these is jatropha.
